About US

Thuto Ke Thato was born out of a real gap — a personal one.

I became a father, and like many parents raising children in multicultural homes, I wanted my child to grow up confident in who they are and where they come from.

The Search for Sepedi Resources
My wife and I come from different cultures, and I wanted to pass down Sepedi in a way that felt natural, joyful, and age-appropriate.
But when I started looking for resources — especially for babies and toddlers — I found almost nothing. The material that existed was either too advanced, too academic, or simply not designed for young children. Nothing helped me build a bond with my child through my language. The Birth of the Idea
So I started creating my own tools: Flashcards. Simple books. Small activities that made language learning playful, colourful, and connected to identity.
And I realised something important: I wasn’t the only parent struggling with this. There are thousands of us raising children across cultures, across languages, across identities — all looking for ways to make our heritage feel alive at home. That’s how Thuto Ke Thato began: as a father trying to keep his language alive in his child’s daily life.

**Our Vision: Building a Cultural Legacy
**
The vision is simple but powerful: Create resources that strengthen identity, deepen family bonds, and give African children characters and stories that look like them, sound like them, and feel like home.
We are committed to building this legacy with you, starting with:
- Beginner Flashcards & Books
- Cultural Storybooks
- Characters that evolve as our children grow

How to Learn Sepedi at Home : A Simple Guide for Parents and Teachers

Learning Sepedi is more than teaching words — it’s passing down identity, confidence, and a sense of belonging. Many parents want their children to stay connected to their roots but aren’t always sure where to start. Teachers face their own challenge: finding early-learning materials that are relevant, culturally grounded, and simple enough for everyday use in the classroom. If you’ve ever wondered how to help a child learn Sepedi in a meaningful and practical way, you’re not alone. The truth is, children learn best when the language feels familiar, visual, playful, and connected to real life. Whether you’re a parent trying to bring Sepedi into your home or a Grade R teacher guiding young learners, the journey doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. There are tools, approaches, and simple habits that make learning Sepedi natural and enjoyable — even if you aren’t confident in the language yourself. This article explores everyday strategies to help children learn Sepedi with confidence and joy. It highlights why culturally-rooted learning matters, what’s missing in current teaching resources, and how visual tools like flashcards can make the process easier and more meaningful across home and classroom environments.

Why Learning Sepedi Matters for Young Children

Children make sense of the world through language. When that language reflects their culture, names, and environment, they feel more grounded and confident. Sepedi is more than vocabulary — it carries emotion, memory, and identity.
For young parents, the fear of losing a mother tongue is real. Many households shift to English for convenience, but over time, children grow up without the sounds, rhythm, and meaning of their own home language. Teachers experience this in classrooms too: children may understand basic Sepedi but struggle to express themselves confidently.
Helping a child learn Sepedi early:
- builds vocabulary naturally
- strengthens cognitive and emotional development
- creates a strong sense of self
- supports smooth learning transitions into foundation phase
- keeps cultural identity alive
The goal is not perfect fluency — it’s creating regular, meaningful exposure.

Common Challenges When Teaching Sepedi

Parents and teachers often share similar struggles, even though their environments differ.Parents commonly face:
- Feeling unsure about where to begin
- Not having simple, child-friendly materials
- Worry that they may “teach it wrong”
- Limited time to introduce the language consistently
Teachers often face:
- Lack of age-appropriate, CAPS-aligned Sepedi resources
- Teaching children who have different levels of exposure to their home language
- Needing quick, ready-to-use tools for everyday lessons
- Struggling to make vocabulary engaging for young learners
These challenges often slow down learning, even when intention and motivation are high

Simple Habits to Help Children Learn Sepedi Daily

Parents and teachers don’t need to overhaul their routines — Sepedi learning can blend naturally into what children already do. Here are practical habits that work in both home and school settings.Use Everyday Moments for Vocabulary
Children learn fastest when language connects to real life.
Try introducing Sepedi during:
- Mealtimes (“Ke eng ye? – What is this?”)
- Playtime (“Mphe bolo ye.”)
- Bath time (“Tšhabela meetseng.”)
- Morning routines (“A re apare.”)
Short, simple phrases repeated daily build confidence.Label the Environment
Visual labels are powerful cues.
At home or in the classroom, label items like:
- “lebati” (door)
- “letsikangope” (window)
- “setulo” (chair)
- “buka” (book)
Children absorb vocabulary by seeing and hearing it often.Introduce Themes
Theme-based learning helps children organise new words.
Try weekly themes such as:
- Body parts
- Emotions
- Animals
- Household objects
- Colours
This makes learning predictable and manageable.Use Visual Learning Tools
Children engage deeply with pictures, patterns, and repetition.
Flashcards, posters, and story prompts help children:
- recognise words faster
- associate words with images
- build memory and recall
Visual tools reduce pressure for both parents and teachers, because they guide the learning naturally.

How Visual Tools Support Identity and Development

Visual learning tools do more than teach vocabulary. When these visuals reflect African children with familiar features, hairstyles, and expressions, something deeper happens. Children feel seen. They feel connected. They learn with more interest and pride. For teachers, visual tools help unify classroom levels. A child who knows very little Sepedi can still participate and learn with confidence because the visuals guide understanding.Tools like culturally-rooted flashcards support multiple learning goals at once:- Language Confidence: Children learn words and phrases they can use daily.
- Cultural Identity: They recognise themselves in the learning materials.
- Early Development: Flashcards encourage memory, recognition, and sequencing skills.
- Engagement: Visuals help maintain focus in short attention spans.
- Ease for Adults: No special training needed — just pick a theme and introduce 2–3 cards a day.
These benefits extend naturally into both home and school environments.

Bringing Sepedi Learning Into the Home

Identity-conscious young parents often feel an emotional responsibility to preserve their mother tongue. But many hesitate because they don’t know where to start. Here are simple steps to build confidence:Start Small
Choose 3–5 words a week. Use them daily.
Children learn consistently, not all at once.
Make It Playful
Turn vocabulary into games:
- “Ke bone eng?” (What do I see?)
- Matching objects to flashcards
- Naming emotions during play
Play makes learning effortless.Use Repetition
Children need to hear words often before they use them.
Repetition isn’t boring — it’s how their brain locks in meaning.
Celebrate Progress
If your child uses even one Sepedi word independently, celebrate it.
Confidence grows from small wins.

Supporting Sepedi Learning in the Classroom

Grade R and foundation phase teachers work with diverse groups of children. Some hear Sepedi daily, while others rarely do. Consistency and structure are essential. Here are practical strategies for teachers:Use Flashcards for Mini-Lessons
Begin the day with a quick 3-minute vocabulary review.
It sets the tone and boosts retention.
Build Routines
Have a Sepedi “word of the day” board.
Let children act out the words — especially emotions and actions.
Reinforce Through Storytelling
Stories help children make sense of new words.
Pick simple stories and emphasise vocabulary during reading.
Integrate Sepedi Into Transitions
Use Sepedi instructions during daily routines:
- “Emang” (stand up)
- “Dulang” (sit down)
- “Eja” (Eat)
Children learn through use, not memorisation.
